On Thursday 23rd of May, Blacon High School welcomed the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Alex Black and the Lady Mayoress, Janet.
The visit began with a chat to two Year 8 members of our Student Parliament who described some of the work they have done this year in the school and projects that they have been involved with in the wider community.
Next, the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress had a short tour of the school. In addition to seeing the wealth of resources that are available in what is still a relatively new building, they went into an Art lesson where students were happy to share the inspiration for their work. Following this, the Lord Mayor joined in a lively debate with Year 10 students, which was held in our fantastic, double-height Library, before visiting The Sanctuary, an area of the school that benefits from a calmer environment that is devoted to offering extra support to students who face a variety of different challenges. After seeing our ICT facilities and state-of-the-art Science labs, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress joined in a Music lesson and sang along as the band rehearsed.
Finally, they enjoyed some refreshments and met with the two students who were lucky enough to be selected to go to France on the Battlefields Tour earlier in the year. The students talked about how moving the experience was and how it had given them a much greater understanding of WW1.
The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were very complimentary about our modern building and the learning environment we create in the school, but more than anything, they were very impressed with our fantastic students.
