Year 9 Chester Cup Final – Blacon High v Christleton – 18th March 2014
Blacon High School came out 4-2 winners of a fantastic U14 final against Christleton. The game proved to be an outstanding game between 2 very evenly matched teams. Between them the 2 schools boasted 12 of this year’s extremely successful U14 Chester Schoolboys squad, 6 from each school. The quality of the 2 teams on show is also evident by the fact that both teams have reached the finals of the National English Schools Football Association Cups that they have both entered (finals to be played in May).
The game was played in good spirits by both teams and Christleton took the lead through a Tom Townesend strike before Blacon equalised from a free kick from Kieran Ball that Calyn Barlow dispatched.
The second half saw Christleton take the lead again, this time through a Sam Ward strike before Calyn Barlow once more levelled the score. With only 3 minutes of normal time remaining and the game looking destined for extra time, Blacon captain Brandon Burrows swung in a fantastic free kick that beat everyone in the box and nestled into the net. Harley Bennion of Blacon High settled the tie in amazing style with a fantastic right footed volley from 25 yards that flew into the net.
Blacon manager, Dave Sabri said, “The game was a fantastic showcase of Chester Schools’ football. I am extremely proud of not just the quality, but the character that my lads showed. They had to dig deep to turn around the score on 2 occasions and it seems fitting that the victory was sealed in the fashion that it was with such an amazing strike.”
The Year 8 football team continued their good form beating Abbeygate 4-2 thanks to an impressive Robbie Davies hat trick and Paul Cowan scoring a volley inside the penalty box. Robbie continued his goal scoring form with two more goals against Christleton and Liam Davies scored the third goal in a 3-2 win. The Year 9 b team lost to Christleton 5-2 with Lewis Faulder and Archie Tushingham scoring our goals and there was a memorable moment when Zac Day nearly scored from the half way line.
The Year 7 team is starting to develop and show signs of promise with some good performances and results. They were convincingly beaten at Bishops Heber but drew in an entertaining game with Abbeygate 4-4, thanks to a Joe Thompson hat trick and Bradley Broadbent strike. They won their final game 5-4 against Christleton – a double strike by Joe O’Gorman and goals by Joe Thompson, Kingsley Rodric and Bradley Broadbent in an entertaining game. The Year 10 boys’ team won 4-2 against Christleton with Lewis Coppack, Billy Fennell, Trey Lattie and the improving Tom Dalton producing the goals in a competitive game. The Year 10 team played the Year 11 team in their final game for the school. The PE staff would like to thank the Year 11 team for all their sporting effort over the last 5 years.

Dwayne Smith and Warren Millington were effective with dig shots and Blacon seemed to be the more offensive team and ran out 3-0 winners, winning two games comfortably.
