Year 9 & 10 GCSE/BTEC PE students visit Liverpool John Moores University
Mr Cairns, Mr Sabri and Miss Dean took 50 students to Liverpool John Moores University for the day on Friday, 31st January, to engage in a number of activities at IM Marsh campus. Welcomed by JMU Activities Manager, Steve Grace, the group experienced an Aim Higher lecture about university life and finance. Students found this very inspiring and expressed an interest in going to university in the future.
The main aim of the visit was for our students to carry out fitness testing and to collate results for their personal exercise plan, as part of their PE course. They were issued with a booklet to record data which will assist them with their coursework. Two trainee PE teachers demonstrated each fitness test in the JMU laboratory and explained what component of fitness it was testing. The students performed each fitness test to the best of their ability and recorded their data with care and accuracy, in pairs.
The students enjoyed lunch in the JMU canteen where they had the opportunity to meet with ex Blacon High School student, Emma Hunter, who is in her final year of her Sports Development degree.
Our final activity of the day was to experience a new sport called Kin Ball. We were the 10th secondary school nationally to be introduced to this new sport by Steve Grace who taught us the rules and scoring systems for this enjoyable, outwitting opponent game. Students could use their skills from other team sports to win points by keeping the inflated Kin Ball off the floor. Steve showed us a number of warm up games, skill activities and how to referee the game properly. All students were engaged with this exciting new sport! Mr Cairns will review feedback and resources before launching Kin Ball into our PE Curriculum.
The students thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Liverpool John Moores University, which will benefit their PE studies and hopefully inspire further education in Sports Studies.
