On the 16th March, Blacon High School’s Year 11 football team secured an admirable 4-2 victory in the Chester and District Cup.
The boys travelled with Mr Sabri to King’s School in Chester and met with the Bishops Heber High School team.
After months of relentless training, the air was palpable with anxiety as both teams warmed up to face each other in what was sure to be an intense final.
The first half saw Blacon High challenging Bishops Heber as Kieran Ball attacked with a skilled left-footed strike. This resulted in Blacon being one up on Heber and taking clear control of the game.
However, through a stroke of bad luck for our boys, Heber managed to equalise before the half-time whistle blew.
After some tactic talks, Blacon were ready to attack again in the second half. Within the first few crucial minutes, Harley Bennion managed to take back control over Heber with an outstanding strike. Heber’s disappointment was clear and Blacon knew they were dominating once again.
In an adrenaline-fuelled turn of events, Bishops Heber scored once more with just thirty seconds to go until the final whistle.
The referee made the decision to take the game to extra time; the boys knew that they had no option but to score.
Harley Bennion proved his fantastic sportsmanship once again in extra time, scoring not one but two further goals for Blacon. Mr Sabri said, ‘Harley’s goals were all brilliant, but his third was nothing less than world-class. It was one of the best goals I’ve ever seen!’
The boys celebrated after the match and were met with admiration and congratulations from staff and fellow students upon their return to school. Congratulations boys; we are certain you can make this a double success in the National Cup later this year.
