Blog w/c 6th June 2022
Hi Everyone,
We were delighted to welcome everyone back on Monday for the first week of the last half term of the year.
Our Year 11 students are in the final two week of their GCSEs and I know they will breathe a huge sigh of relief when they put their pens down at the end of the last exam. For the rest of the school community, it’s business as usual. We will maintain the focus on working through the curriculum effectively and remind all students that we continue to have the same, high expectations of them including: attitude to learning; homework; uniform and appearance and how we communicate with each other at all times.
The weather is much warmer and the sun is out for much of the time so let’s make the most of the next few weeks as the school year draws to a close.
Food

In the Food department this week, Year 8 pupils have been looking at the functions of nutrients, focusing on protein. They have learned why we need it, its scientific structure, and what sources are the most valuable ones for achieving optimal health. In these lessons, we have worked on our cognitive ability to link previous learning in other areas of the curriculum. Students have used effective discussion to draw upon existing ideas and this has been a great tool in helping them to retain high level information. Well done Year 8!
PE success

Blacon High School played two excellent cricket matches on Wednesday 8th June against the Catholic High School
Both U15 teams scored 53/6; we had one ball remaining but it went out meaning that the match resulted in a draw, which seemed like a fair result. Kole John retired on 20 👏
Our U13s enjoyed a much improved performance, losing in the end by only 34 runs; a close margin. Rhys Mort was the player of the match and illustrated excellent batting & fielding throughout.
Well done to everyone.
Student Leadership Team

As our current Year 11s get ready to leave us, I have to take this opportunity to thank all those who have represented the school so brilliantly as part of the Student Leadership Team for their very hard work during the year. They have supported every event that has been held in the school, represented the school at a number of external events and conferences, made numerous speeches, liaised with students, staff, parents and governors, and have led or been involved in several charitable events. Thank you so much.
Pictured above is just a small group of this year’s Year 11 students who have adopted a number of key roles in school such as: Head Student; Deputy Head Student; Leader of the Student Parliament; Head Prefect and Prefect.
This means that it’s time to recruit a new Student Leadership Team for 2022/23. I am delighted to say that we have 22 applications, across all of the roles, and interviews will be taking place towards the end of June. I look forward to sharing the new team with you once the selection process is complete. It is fantastic that so many of our young people want to take on this additional responsibility and are willing to become a voice for the student body and the wider community of Blacon.
Student Parliament

The Student Parliament met on Friday 10th June to discuss how we expand what the team does, how we can contribute even more to ensuring that everyone has a positive experience while they are with us, and to develop new roles for the next academic year.
There were several ideas put forward for new roles including: Sports Leaders, Eco Champions and Charity Coordinators for KS3 and KS4. Thank you to everyone for your contributions.
The team identified the key qualities that post-holders will need to fill these roles effectively and began to draft job descriptions.
Also, I am delighted to announce that Miss Beyer will be supporting the work of the Student Parliament in 2022/23 and will focus on working with our KS3 representatives. Welcome to the team Miss Beyer.
