Curriculum vision

“Write to be understood, speak to be heard, read to grow.” – Lawrence Clark Powell

Our English curriculum is designed to empower our students with the knowledge, empathy and skills to become effective communicators of their own thoughts and feelings, and those of others.

Effective Communication is achieved through:

  • Equipping students with a dynamic and broad spectrum of vocabulary and the necessary tools to become autonomous and imaginative communicators for a variety of audiences and purposes.
  • Fostering a knowledge-rich understanding of our literary heritage and seminal-world literature across time, and by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure, and to enhance knowledge acquisition.
  • Encouraging students to be perceptive speakers and listeners: enable them to articulate their ideas and to become competent through the art of verbal expression.

Throughout the course, each student will develop their mind, body and character through: thinking imaginatively, empathy and enhancing their thoughts with expression.

Students will develop enhanced knowledge and skills in writing, refining their drafting skills and developing resilience to communicate appropriately, accurately and at length.

Through reading in particular, our students will broaden their social and cultural awareness, enhance their intellect and become emotionally conscious of their own needs and dreams. They will be respectful of others, and become valuable members of the global community.

Students will be fluent, verbal communicators who question, listen and challenge confidently thus enabling them to form positive relationships in all contexts: professionally and socially; formally and informally.

“My English Teachers have given me the opportunity to experience voices from all over the world and to know more about the lives of others.”  Year 9 student
